Dear Friends of Family History:

Welcome to the official site of The Genealogical Society of Sarasota (GSS), a non-profit genealogical organization that has continuously served the Sarasota area for over 40 years.

Our purpose as stated in our By-Laws is multi-faceted:

  •   promote individual and community awareness of genealogy and family history,
  •   encourage original genealogical research and publication of findings,
  •   educate members via professional genealogical speakers, seminars, workshops, Special Interest Groups,  and
  •   inform about genealogical activities of other organizations.

GSS meets the second Saturday of the month from October through May at The Selby Library auditorium in downtown Sarasota at 10:00 a.m. for light refreshments, 10:30 a.m. for business meeting and Society program, 12:00 p.m. for Brick Wall help, and 12:30 p.m. for an informal lunch where you can chat about your own research at a nearby restaurant.  Parking is free all day on Saturdays.

Our annual dues of $20/individual and $30/family are used to bring top genealogical speakers to the Society, purchase books and databases for The Selby Library which contains a collection of over 12,000 volumes on genealogy that was originally donated by our Society, special projects, and member workshops on key genealogy topics.

Part of our outreach includes our monthly Special Interest Groups that are open to all who are interested in: Computer use for genealogy research, DNA testing and networking, researching German ancestors, Polish ancestors, Republic of Ireland ancestors, UK ancestors, and/or colonial New England ancestors.  Three times annually we publish and distribute electronically our genealogy Newsletter containing success stories and many genealogy research tips for our members.

GSS is a wonderful place to make new friends with similar genealogy interests and perhaps ancestors.  We hope you will join us for our next Society meeting to experience for yourself all that our Society offers.

For the foreseeable future until the pandemic is under control, all our meetings will be conducted via Zoom.us. All SIG meetings  with the exception of the Mentorship and DNA SIGs are open to all; however, Society meetings are only accessible for members of GSS.

Sincerely,

Nancy R. Johnson, President
